This Hobby...
Scale models come in wide variety of
scales such as 1:8, 1:10, 1:12, 1:18, 1:24, 1:43, and 1:64.
Most, if not all of them consist of materials such as metal
(die-cast), plastic, and resin. Of all different scales,
1:43 and 1:18 are currently more popular among collectors than
others. Here at Project118.Com, most of the models feature
in the photo gallery are 1:18 scale.
Based on my knowledge, 1:43 scale is
the most popular among the collectors around the world. 1:43
scale also have the most variations of automobiles to choose from.
Since most 1:43 scale models are crafted with resin, they don't
usually come with any open part (door, hood, and such). The
price for a 1:43 scale model ranges from $30 (USD) to hundreds of
dollars. Due to the relatively small size, they don't take
up as much space as larger scale models would. It's a
perfect scale for collectors who wishes to maintain a large
collection with wide variety of subjects yet might not have a lot
of physical space to spare.
Compares to 1:43 scale, 1:18 scale
is relatively new. Most of the 1:18 scale models are crafted
with a mix of metal and plastic. Usually, models in this
scale have open parts to reveal the engine bay and interior
details. Thanks to the additional details, larger size, and
relatively low price point, 1:18 scale gains popularity very
quickly among the collectors. The price for a 1:18 scale
model ranges from $30 (USD) to hundreds of dollars. While
collectors do get more with 1:18 scale models, these models are
rather big and bulky. Unlike 1:43 scale models, most 1:18
scale models do not come with display case. So, space and
display option can be huge challenges to all serious collectors.
Regardless of scale, this collecting
hobby can get extremely expensive very quickly. A scale
model might only cost $30, a collection of 100 would cost $3,000!
Nowadays, a decent 1:18 scale model with decent details costs just
shy of $100. Not to mention some super high end 1:18 scale
models cost around $250 to $300 each. So, it is very
important for all collectors to watch the spending to avoid
negative impact to other more significant things in life.
To most of us who is really into
automobiles, the dream of owning a fleet of our favorite vehicles
can be just that, a dream. Scale models can provide us with
a great way to appreciate the automobiles we like at a tiny
fraction of the cost. While these models can't never replace
their real counterpart, they are the best alternative for
automobile enthusiasts like us. Imagine a room full of
exotic, rare, fast, vintage automobiles in any scale, the sight
can be as impressive a couple of exotic cars on the driveway.
